Vegan Döner? In big cities like Hamburg or Berlin this has been reality for a long time. Since 2015 Nürnberg also has its first plant-based version of the famous German-Turkish food invention. Jenny Schmidt and Ayhan Akbal opened the 100 % vegan Imbiss Vegöner in a former butcher shop (how appropriate!) in the district St. Johannis. And as you might guess by the name, vegan Döner plays the main role here. But they offer lots of other delightful dishes for a small price, like burgers, hot dogs, stews or salads.
A vegan Imbiss named Vegöner of course has to be evaluated based on its vegan Döner Kebab, and it tastes great, just like a good Döner has to taste. It’s only that the „meat“ is not chicken, turkey or veal, but soya meat. For the sauces you can choose between red (mayo based with tomato) and white (yoghurt based with herbs) at Vegöner. As a regular customer you just order both, because that’s how it tastes best. If you don’t want to eat with your hands, you can order the Döner in a box or on a plate with rice/fries instead of in a bread roll or a wrap (Dürüm). Caution: the Döner plate has quite a kick and even some of the hungriest persons failed to eat it up!
You can refresh yourself in proper style with homemade Ayran, of course in a vegan version too, or choose from a large choice of drinks like Club Mate, Fritz sodas or even beer from the organic brewery Lammsbräu. But the rest of the food choice is impressive, too. Ghoulash and stews satisfy the appetite for traditional European food. The burgers remind of the classics of McDonald’s or Burger King, atleast when talking about texture and taste, just bigger and free of animal products. But from time to time new creations like a latino version of burger & hot dog with guacamole and tomato salsa find their way on the menu.
The only drawback: the place is not really big and in the peaktimes of the lunch and dinner hours your order could take some time to be ready. But at Vegöner every product is made individually with love. Here’s no room for standardised mass processing.
