Obazda – sometimes also spelt Obatzter or Obatzda – is a savoury cheese cream from Bavaria, which is often served as a snack. Both in summer in beer gardens and at large festivities such as the Oktoberfest, the dish is often eaten with pretzels. For Obazda, soft and cream cheese such as Camembert or Brie is traditionally mixed with room temperature butter and spices such as paprika powder and caraway seeds. As there is now a purely plant-based equivalent for all basic ingredients, Obazda can also be prepared very simply and traditionally in the vegan way. Even non-Bavarians should give this creamy spread a try.
